戴妃葬礼，艾尔顿‧约翰，candle in the wind 风中之烛

　[歌词讲解]

　　1. 这首Candle in the Wind “风中之烛”的原曲是Elton John以一个影迷的身分，看待他的偶像 Marilyn Monroe(玛丽莲·梦露)绚烂而悲惨的一生。1997年，英国黛安娜王妃车祸身亡，这首歌被选为代表性的纪念歌曲，修改歌词后由艾尔顿强重新演绎，推出后在英美等地大受欢迎，一周内就卖出大约约三百五十万张，成为有史以来单周销售速度最快与销售量最高的单曲唱片，从这张纪念单曲的发行量来看，不难想象当时黛安娜王妃在媒体和大众当中的影像力。
　　2. 这里用England's Rose来代表Diana王妃，因为rose是英国的国花，而Diana王妃在英国人民的心目中确实是一个国宝，所以这里用rose来形容就最合适不过了。这里跟rose有关的几个习语大家可以注意一下，一个是a bed of roses，意思是“快乐的人生，悠哉游哉的生活”，比如说，Life isn't a bed of roses. 人生并非事事称心如意。那么习语not all roses就表示和a bed of roses相反的意义，“不尽如人意，不尽善尽美”，例如上面那个例句 Life isn't a bed of roses. 我们也可以说成 Life is not all roses.再举个例子，Being an opera star is not all roses by any means. 当上了歌剧明星也并非事事如意。
　　3. 这里的itself代替的是grace，grace在这里的意思是“仁慈，怜悯”，这里是说后来戴安娜王妃极力从事慈善工作，以她的影响力结合歌星名人募捐。自己也经常亲赴各地探视因病或是地雷而受创的孩童。那些身影才是永留多数人心中的黛妃。
　　4. Now you belong to heaven是一个比较未完的说法，实际上是说“某人去世了”。belong to 这里表示“属于”，比如，That dictionary belongs to the library. 那本词典是图书馆的。还有，belong with someone or something 表示“应该在某处，通常在某处”，我们可以说，Where does this chair belong? 这把椅子应该放在那？也可以说， Where is this chair kept? 再举个例子，A child belongs with its mother. 小孩子应该和母亲住在一起。

　　5. spell something out这个短语可以表示“拼出某字”，比如说，Can you spell that word out for me again? 那个字你再拼一遍好吗？spell something out还可以表示“讲清楚某事，把某事解释清楚”，例如，She's so stupid that you have to spell everything out. 她太笨了，什么事都要给她解释的明明白白的。
　　6. set in 这个词组表示“(雨，坏天气，传染病等)开始可能持续下去”，例如，I must get those bulbs planted before the cold weather sets in. 我得在天冷之前把这些球茎种上。
　　7. Your candle's burned out long before Your legend ever will. 蜡烛终会燃尽，你的传奇却将永世不朽。其实这里是说Your candle's burned out long before but Your legend ever will be there. long before表示“很久以前”，比如说， She said she had seen the movie long before. 她说她很久以前就看过这部电影。跟long before 很相近的一个短语是before long，表示“不久，不久以后”，要区分开，例如， Before long, the noise dropped completely and the boat began to drift gently across the water. 不久，轰鸣声完全消失了，这只船开始慢悠悠地漂浮在水面上。
　　8. 这里的loveliness就是指戴安娜王妃。
　　9. empty在歌词当中的意思是“精神空虚”，比如说，We feel empty now the children have left home. 孩子们都离开了家，我们感到很空虚。在口语当中，empty还可以表示“饥饿的”，例如：I feel really empty! 我真的很饿！，跟hungry一样。
　　10. 我想这里的torch是用来照明天堂之路的火炬或者是火把，人们希望戴安娜王妃一路走好，不再孤单寂寞。
　　11. golden child指的是“备受尊崇的人”，这里用来表明戴安娜王妃在英国民众心中无与伦比的地位。
　　12. the truth当然是指戴安娜王妃因车祸丧生的事实了。bring someone to tears，是“让某人哭泣”的意思。
　　13. lost是指“迷失方向的，不知所措的，困惑的”，这是一个比喻意义，比如说，I got rather lost trying to find the station. 我找车站找的晕头转向。We would be totally lost without your help. 如果没有你的帮助，我们真的不知道该怎么办才好。
　　14. the wings of your compassion，从字面理解就是“悲悯的翅膀”，在深入理解一下呢，就是把戴安娜比喻成一个善良有悲悯之心的天使，让人难以忘怀，可以看出戴安娜在英国人民心中的精神领袖地位。
